Berties of Bay
Robin Hood's Bay, North Yorkshire
Matthew Pugh set up Berties of Bay after realising only a handful of skilled knitters left in Britain still knew the traditional Yorkshire guernsey patterns — the seamless, tightly-knitted jumpers that fishing communities along this coast have worn for generations, built without a single weak seam for saltwater to get into. Rather than watch the craft disappear, he opened a shop dedicated to keeping it alive.
Today, Berties of Bay stocks guernsey jumpers, smock tops and fishermen's beanies — heritage coastal pieces genuinely made in Britain, with the guernseys now machine-knitted in Leicester rather than by hand on the coast itself.
Tucked into one of Yorkshire's most iconic fishing villages, the shop has become a destination in its own right — proof that a small, single-minded shop can keep a nearly-lost craft going, one jumper at a time.
